3 Garo rebels arrested

Tura, May 24: Police today arrested three cadres of the A’chik Songna An’pachakgipa Kotok (ASAK) group from Asanang, about 18km from here.

Two cadres were arrested from a private vehicle on its way to Tura from Nagaland via Guwahati. Based on information received from the arrested persons, another cadre was arrested from Tura.

The two have been identified as Imti Wabang, 34, and Robinson Sangma, 29. Police recovered 107 rounds of .32 and 48 rounds of .22 bullets, which were hidden in their shoes. The third militant has been identified as Cherang M. Sangma, 27, the finance secretary of the outfit.

Upon searching his house, the police team recovered ASAK and GNLA demand pads from his house, along with a SBML gun with a modified bore. West Garo hills SP, Mukesh Singh said, “Based on intelligence inputs, special weapons and tactics (SWAT) commandos launched an operation and arrested the duo. They are both residents of Dimapur. This is not their first visit to Tura,” said Singh.

“Upon questioning, they provided the name of another ASAK member, who had paid Rs 25,000 for delivery ammunition,” said Singh.

ASAK is a breakaway faction of the GNLA, formed in February this year.
