Murder convicts

Bolpur, May 23: A Bolpur court today pronounced three persons guilty of the murder of Calcutta resident Renu Sarkar in Santiniketan in January 2012.

Sarkar, a 78-year-old retired schoolteacher, was smothered with a pillow when she tried to resist a robbery attempt by the trio, including the caretaker of her two-storey house in Santiniketan.

The trio — caretaker Ujjwal Tapadar, Mangal Sahani and Pintu Das — were found guilty under IPC sections 302 (murder) and 394 (voluntarily causing hurt). The sentence will be announced on Monday.
