MI are not taking DD lightly

Mumbai: A crushing victory over Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) has kept Mumbai Indians (MI) alive for a play-off berth. That said, the defending champions have no time to relax, as they need another comprehensive win on Friday, here, against the bottom-ranked Delhi DareDevils (DD).

However, they will also have to pray for Rajasthan Royals’ defeat to Kings XI Punjab. The Royals’ victory on Thursday means an end to MI’s IPL VII campaign. At the same time, they can’t afford to be complacent since they are taking on a team that has been the punching bag in the competition.

The impressive seven-wicket victory at Mohali, even without two of their key bowlers — Lasith Malinga and Harbhajan Singh — had created slender hopes for MI.

The return to their fortress, the Wankhede, where they have suffered just one defeat in the last 11 games, spreading over to last season, would be a comforting factor for captain Rohit Sharma and his teammates.

MI did resurrect their campaign after returning home but defeats against Chennai Super Kings — their only defeat at the Wankhede in a long while — and Kolkata Knight Riders in Cuttack in their last six games have put their qualifying hopes on the razor’s edge.

The hosts have to win their game against the Daredevils as well as well the next one on Sunday against the Royals to take their points tally to 14 and yet, may lose out if other results don’t go in their favour.
