Capital venue for nationals

Ranchi is gearing up to host the 54th Senior Artistic National Gymnastic Championship from June 3 to 5 at Ganapat Rai Indoor Stadium in the Hotwar-based mega sports complex.

Organising secretary and Jharkhand Gymnastic Association official Rajesh Gupta said at a news meet on Tuesday that as many as 550 participants, comprising gymnasts (both men and women) and technical officials, would flock to the capital for the meet.

Players representing 25 states in the event will reach the capital on June 2. The participants will be lodged at the sports hostel in Hotwar.

“As many as 13 events will be held during the meet. While girls alone will contest seven of these, the rest will see boys vying for the honours. Many national-level athletes will take part in the meet,” said Gupta.

He added that the discipline was considered one of the best sporting events owing to its fusion of talent and aesthetics.

Gupta maintained that they met state sports minister Geetashree Oraon on Monday and apprised her of the event. “We hope to get every possible support from the state government,” he said.
