Help held for jewel theft

A young couple’s domestic help and her daughter have been arrested for allegedly stealing jewels and ornaments worth Rs 3 lakh from the employer’s Gariahat home.

Subhasish Naskar and his wife Rajanigandha had reported to police the theft of gems and jewellery worth Rs 4.1 lakh on May 15.

Police said Rina Chakraborty, the domestic help, and her daughter Priyanka Das were arrested after the bulk of the stolen jewellery was recovered from their possession on Monday.

Police sources said Subhasish and Rajanigandha of Gariahat Road, both public sector employees, would leave their three-year-old daughter in Rina’s care every day before going for work.

An officer of Gariahat police station said it was a case of breach of trust as Rina, in her mid-40s, took advantage of the couple’s faith in her.

“They said Rina had been working with the family for many years and had never done anything to raise suspicion. Her daughter Priyanka, who lives with her in-laws at Joynagar, would often drop in. She too had free access to the Naskar home.”

The officer said the couple realised the theft a day before a trip to a hill station in north India.

“They had planned to shift some jewels and ornaments kept in a wooden cupboard to to a bank locker for safekeeping before leaving the city on a summer trip. But they failed to locate the cotton bag in which the valuables — a gem-encrusted necklace, bracelets, bangles and earrings — were kept. The bag was inside a bedroom cupboard,” a police source said.

The police found out during investigation that the cupboard had a lock on one of the two doors while the other was kept unlocked.

Sources said the ornaments were kept in the locked part but the wooden wall that separated the two portions could be moved.

“It is apparent that someone familiar with the cupboard’s make had accessed the locked part from the unlocked side. Since Rina has been associated with the family for many years, we interrogated her first. She broke down during questioning and confessed,” said a senior police officer.

Most of the stolen items were recovered earlier this week after raids at Rina’s home in Sonarpur and daughter Priyanka’s Joynagar house.

The police suspect that a part of the booty has been sold. “We are trying to find the buyer and recover the rest of the stolen ornaments,” an officer added.

The state government has suspended school service commission (SSC) assistant secretary Amitesh Biswas for alleged dereliction of duty.

Biswas was “released” from his post on April 8 hours after he alleged that undeserving candidates were appointed assistant teachers.

He was released for speaking out of turn to the media without the commission chairman’s permission. The chairman had lodged an FIR against him for entering the office on April 9. The government suspended him for not giving a satisfactory reply.
