IRB jawan injured in blast

Imphal, May 18: An India Reserve Battalion rifleman guarding the private residence of Manipur PCC vice-president Sagolsem Achouba Singh was wounded when a bomb exploded at the gate of the Congress leaderís house at Wangoi bazar in Imphal West this morning.

Police said the rifleman, identified as Lourembam Herojit, picked up something wrapped in a polythene pack at the southern gate of the house and it suddenly exploded while he was trying to throw it away into a nearby drain.

He was admitted to the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences.

The police said Achouba Singh was not at home when the incident took place, as he is in Delhi.

They said the improvised explosive device (IED) was planted by militants and the target could have been the Congress leader.

They, however, ruled out any link between the Lok Sabha election and the planting of the bomb.

Sources said it could be linked to monetary demand by a militant organisation to the Congress leader.

Wangoing police station registered a case but no one has been arrested yet.
