Army chief

New Delhi, May 12: The Election Commission today gave the Centre the go-ahead to start the process of appointing the next army chief despite a BJP claim that the matter should be left to the next government.

Sources said the commission this morning clarified that defence appointments did not come under the model code of conduct’s restrictions. Later in the day, the defence ministry recommended the name of army vice-chief Lt Gen. Dalbir Singh Suhag to the appointments committee of cabinet for the post.
