Siliguri, May 9: The Trinamul Congress has kicked off the campaign for the elections to the three-tier panchayat system in the rural areas of the Siliguri subdivision by holding meetings in the villages of Matigara block.
North Bengal development minister and Trinamul’s Darjeeling district president Gautam Deb today said the meetings had been held in Matigara in the past three days and the campaign would be extended to other three blocks which fall under the Siliguri Mahakuma Parishad in due course.
“The development projects taken up by the state government through north Bengal development department and bodies like the SJDA (Siliguri Jalpaiguri Development Authority) are explained to people at the meetings,” said the minister.
Trinamul also held a meeting of the party’s district committee members and leaders and workers from the four blocks early this week to discuss the campaign.
“We will open a central office to co-ordinate the campaign in Bagdogra. Some posts were vacant at local committees and we have filled them up. A core committee was also formed to oversee the campaign. Further, names of candidates for panchayat polls have been sought from the party workers in respective wards,” said Deb.
Elections to the SMP, panchayat samitis and panchayats are slated for June.
