7 held for IPL ‘betting’

Siliguri, May 8: Seven persons were arrested from Milanpally here yesterday for allegedly betting on an IPL match.

Siliguri metropolitan police said the seven were picked up when a match between Kolkata Knight Riders and Delhi Daredevils was on.

“Based on information from our sources, we raided a house at Millanpally and arrested a group of youths, most of them in their twenties. They were involved in betting,” a police officer said.

The police seized Rs 83,000 in cash, 10 cellphone hand sets and some papers that had names of players, some phone numbers and other details from the house.

All the arrested persons have been booked under the West Bengal Gambling and Price Competition Act and Section 420 (cheating) of the IPC.

“Nikhil Prasad, a resident of Calcutta, had taken the house on rent at Millanpally here. He was running the betting racket from there and had Arjun Gupta, from Chappalpatty of Siliguri, and five others with him. All of them were arrested yesterday evening,” Sudip Roy Basunia, the additional public prosecutor, said today.

All the seven persons were produced in the additional chief judicial magistrate’s court here today.

“The court has ordered three day police custody for Nikhil and Arjun. The other five have been remanded in jail custody for 14 days,” Roy Basunia said.
