Royal Challengers Bangalore captain Virat Kohli hailed AB de Villiers as the “best player in the world” after the South African produced a blistering unbeaten knock of 89 runs off 42 balls to help the RCB register a four-wicket victory over Sunrisers Hyderabad, in Bangalore, on Sunday.
“That’s the best knock in a T20 game I’ve ever seen,” added Kohli at the post-match presentation.
Sunrisers captain Shikhar Dhawan said that they had tried their best and were very much in the game, and at the same time conceded that a great innings from AB took the game away from them.
“We tried our best but you can't help when somebody plays a great knock. Unfortunately, we missed the half chance AB offered at point and he took the game away after that.”
Virat Kohli: AB is by far the best player in the world. He has shown it every now and then and it’s a pleasure to watch him play. Today he has again shown why he is rated the No. 1 in the world in any format. Today was one of the days where we needed someone to put his hand up and win us the game from that tough situation, and the kind of innings AB played… that’s the best knock in a T20 game I’ve ever seen.
I think the opposition put up a score that is below par given the history here at the Chinnaswamy Stadium. Gayle gave us a decent start, but we were in a spot of bother shortly after. But, AB played a gem of an innings to totally take the game away from the opposition. We just needed to stay in the zone, maintain our cool and composure and we got the right result.
Shikhar Dhawan: We tried our best but you can’t help when somebody plays a great knock. Unfortunately, we missed the half chance AB offered at point and he took the game away after that.
I believe we were about 15 runs short. The wicket also did not play the way it usually plays. We started off well as a bowling unit but AB played amazingly. Karn Sharma bowled nicely… he got two of their best left-handers out but he missed a half-chance of AB and that proved costly.
AB de Villiers (MoM): It was one of those nights when everything went my way. I had a Skype session with my mom and dad today, and my dad said the others are lucky. I guess I had my luck today. With Steyn and me, it’s just like a tennis match. He bowled exceptionally well in the first over, the second over just went may way. So, he won the first set and I won the second. I would have loved to have a third set against him.
We’ve got a wonderful bunch of guys and we’ve got a great team spirit. I was just trying to keep my partner calm. In these kind of situations, it is the small things that matter the most. Things like team spirit matter in the end. Yuvraj kept boosting me up tonight so I must give credit to him. The crowd was unbelievable too! I love playing here in the Garden City and we have got very friendly people here.
