Sania and Cara make the final

Oeiras: Sania Mirza and her doubles partner Cara Black marched into the final of the Portugal Open while Somdev Dev Varman went down against top seed Tomas Berdych in the men’s singles second round on Thursday.

In doubles quarter final, Divij Sharan and Purav Raja also lost to Pablo Cuevas and David Marrero.

Continuing their good form, the top-seeded pair of Sania and Cara chalked out a 6-4, 6-3 win over the American pair of Liezel Huber and Lisa Raymond.

Earlier, in the semis, Sania and Cara registered a 6-3, 6-4 win over Silvia Soler-Espinosa and Shuai Zhang.

The Indo-Zimbabwean team defeated the Spanish-Chinese pair in one hour and nine minutes.

In the men’s singles, Dev Varman could not match Berdych’s class, losing 3-6, 2-6 in the round of 16.

Left-handed Divij and Raja paid the price for not cashing in on the opportunities they had since they converted just one of the four breakpoints they got in the match.        (PTI)
