Cyclist run over

A cyclist was run over by a goods vehicle on Jessore Road at Belgachhia on Friday evening.

Around 2,000 people set up a roadblock about 100 metres north of Belgachhia Metro station, attacked cops and ransacked police vehicles to protest the accident, bringing peak-hour traffic on Jessore Road to a halt for more than an hour.

Local residents alleged the driver of the Tata 407 was trying to dodge a few cops who were extorting money from passing vehicles.

Sahab Ali, 24, a resident of Lala Maidan in Belgachhia, was returning home around 8.30pm from Dum Dum, where he worked at a bag manufacturing unit, when the Tata 407 hit his cycle. Police said Sahab fell on the road and his head was smashed.

“The driver suddenly accelerated to evade the cops standing in front of a petrol pump and extorting money. The vehicle swerved and hit Ali,” said Harun Rashid, a resident of Belgachhia.

Police, however, said it was a case of rash driving.
