Sen in tears in court

Calcutta, April 30: Saradha chief Sudipta Sen today broke down after meeting his son Subhojit in Bankshall Court, where they were produced in connection with the money laundering charges levelled by the Enforcement Directorate.

Sudipta’s second wife Piyali, arrested along with Subhojit on April 16, also could not hold back her tears and was seen being consoled by the Saradha chairman’s first wife Priyanka during the 45-minute session.

While Sudipta and Piyali were granted bail by the chief judge of the city sessions court, Mumtaz Khan, Subhojit was remanded in judicial custody till May 14 after the lawyer representing the ED argued that his release could result in tampering of important evidence in the case.

Although Sudipta was granted bail, he will continue to stay in jail in connection with other cases against him. The other accused, Debjani Mukherjee, one of the directors of the Saradha Group, didn’t appear in the court because of poor health.

Piyali was granted bail on April 25 but was sent to judicial custody as her legal team failed to meet one of the three conditions set by the court.

The court had directed her to furnish three bail bonds of Rs 10,000 each. One of them, the court had specified, must be a local surety bond — an immovable property in Calcutta valued at least Rs 10,000 that will have to be mortgaged with the court.

Subhojit had been sent to five days’ judicial custody.

The hearing was fixed for today.
