Water crisis in Jorethang

Gangtok, April 27: The residents of Jorethang town in South Sikkim have been facing a shortage of water since Friday after the state public health engineering department stopped the supply.

Jorethang has a population of 4,000 and is 80km from here. Most of the local people are going to the Rangit river, about half a kilometre from Jorethang, to fill buckets of water, to bathe and to wash their clothes.

“The public health and engineering department used to provide water two times in a day earlier but nowadays the department is hardly releasing water,” said a local resident.

The residents of the town have decided to meet the district collector of South Sikkim on Monday to apprise him of the water shortage.

The executive engineer of the department concerned could not be contacted.
