Domestic help held for stealing

The domestic help of a restaurant owner was arrested early on Sunday while he was allegedly fleeing with valuables stolen from his employer’s house in Ballygunge.

A police patrol spotted 28-year-old Clarance Rodrigues, alias Sujit, a resident of Sonarpur, moving suspiciously along SP Mukherjee Road around 2am on Sunday. He was carrying a plastic packet.

“As soon as we asked him to stop, he started running. Two policemen nabbed him. We found cash and jewellery in the packet,” said an officer of Ballygunge police station.

Sujit has confessed to the crime, the police said. He has been remanded in police custody.

“The restaurant owner, Jaspal Singh, had left for New Zealand on a business trip three days ago. His family members went with him,” said the officer.

Singh had appointed Sujit as domestic help a few months ago, the police said. During interrogation the police came to know that the youth was given a set of keys to the house for regular cleaning.

“Other than the house keys, we found several other keys in his possession. Apparently, Sujit had made himself duplicate keys to the rooms where the valuables were kept,” said the officer.

“Sujit used to stay at the servants’ quarters. He said this was not the first time he has stolen valuables from the house since the family went to New Zealand.”
