Banerjee, Goswami honoured

Calcutta: Legends P.K. Banerjee and Chuni Goswami were bestowed with Lifetime Achievement awards at the ONGC-Calcutta Sports Journalists’ Club’s annual awards function on Friday evening.

Pankaj Advani, who’s won eight world titles (billiards, snooker), was given the best sportsperson of the country award while former India captain I.M. Vijayan was rewarded for his outstanding contribution to football.

Among those who gave away the awards were Akhtar Ali, Manoj Kothari and Joydeep Karmakar. V.K. Mahendru, GM-Head Corporate Sports, ONGC, was present at the function.

For Vijayan, who played for both East Bengal and Mohun Bagan, this was a sort of homecoming. “I’m in Calcutta after almost two years… Nothing much has changed,” he said.

A deputy superintendent with Kerala Police, Vijayan is keeping fingers crossed about the Indian Super League. “Let’s wait and see… I’ve no idea about how it’s going to shape up… No one has got in touch with me.”
