Madrid: Japanese fourth seed Kei Nishikori eased into the quarter finals of the Barcelona Open on Thursday with a 6-0, 6-4 victory over Kazakstan’s Andrey Golubev.
In doubles, Somdev Dev Varman and his Croatian partner Ante Pavic bowed out, following a defeat in the quarter finals. Somdev and Pavic frittered away a one-set lead to lose 6-4, 3-6, 5-10 to Jesse Huta Galung and Stephanie Robert.
Somdev had earlier lost in a first round singles match. Nishikori is making his first appearance of the season on clay in the Catalan capital and after struggling past Roberto Bautista Agut in three sets on Tuesday, he seemed more at ease as he equalled his best-ever run in Barcelona by reaching the last eight.
The world No. 17 is likely to face a tougher task on Friday, though, when he faces Marin Cilic for a place in the semi-finals. Cilic secured a place in last eight following a tough a 7-5, 6-7 (3), 7-6 (5) victory over Tommy Robredo.
The 12th seed started strong on his service games, but eventually suffered a break, as did Robredo to keep things tight in the first set.
