Campaign ride kills MLA

Hyderabad, April 24: YSR Congress leader Shoba Nagi Reddy today succumbed to grievous injuries suffered in a road accident last night while returning from an election meeting.

The four-time MLA of Allagadda in Kurnool district and YSR Congress’s deputy floor manager breathed her last at 11.05am at Hyderabad’s Care Hospital while undergoing multiple surgeries for seven rib fractures suffered when she was thrown off her vehicle.

The vehicle was tossed four times in air when the driver braked to avoid a mound of paddy on the road.

She was returning after campaigning for herself for the Assembly polls and her husband former MP Bhooma Nagi Reddy, who is fighting from Nandyal constituency.

Shoba, 46, has become the first casualty of this year’s Lok Sabha polls.

The Election Commission has decided not to countermand the election because of the death. However, since it is past the last date for withdrawing nominations from Allagadda, the YSR Congress will not have any candidate from the seat.

The poll panel is yet to take a decision on whether to keep her name and the party’s emblem in the EVM.

Shoba is the daughter of former minister S.V. Subba Reddy. She began her political career in the Telugu Desam Party and was a minister in the Chandrababu Naidu government.

She joined Chiranjeevi’s Praja Rajyam in 2009 before resigning en masse in 2012 after Chiranjeevi decided to merge his party with the Congress.

She then joined Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy’s YSR Congress and won the Allagadda by-poll.
