4 children die in mishap

Shillong, April 23: Four children died today of burn injuries in Meghalaya’s Ri Bhoi district.

The incident happened when one among a group of five children playing inside a dug-up pit, around six feet deep, lit a matchstick to burn an insect, an official from the 108 Emergency Service Ambulance said.

However, the official said, the presence of dried leaves and grass fanned the flames and the children were unable to clamber out of the pit in time.

The incident occurred at noon at Umkaduh vill- age under Umling block, which is around 70km from here.

While Wanbha Jyntem, 8, died on the spot, three others — Safika Jyntem, 7, Kulab Jyntem, 5, and Harbat Jyntem, 7, — were declared “brought dead” to the hospital.

Upon learning about the incident, the 108 Emergency Service Ambulance based at Nongpoh and Byrnihat was pressed into service and took the children to Nongpoh civil hospital.
