Bijay, Nazia claim titles

Guwahati, April 20: Bijay Kumar Mohanty and Nazia Ahmed of Sports Authority of India Guwahati annexed the under-18 boys’ and girls’ singles titles in the Kaliyani Open Tennis Tournament that concluded in Numaligarh today. While Mohanty beat Vitsizolie Negi of Nagaland 6-3, 7-5, Ahmed overcame Janashree Saikia of Guwahati 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 in the final.

In the boys’ semi-finals, top seed Mohanty defeated third seed Siddhartha Choudhury of AATA Tennis Complex, Guwahati 7-6(7-5), 6-1, while Negi shocked sixth seed Bedabrat Mohan of Sivasagar 4-6, 6-1, 6-0.

In the girls’ first semi-finals, Ahmed overcame Thejanino of Nagaland 6-3, 1-6, 6-1 while the second semi-final was a comparatively easier affair for Saikia who upset second seed Devangana Borkakoty of Jorhat 6-1, 6-3. Third seed Devangana won the under-14 girls’ title defeating Ishani Goswami of Digboi 7-6(7-2), 6-1. In boys’ under-14, top seed Ronit Bora of Guwahati got the better of Tathagat Tulsi Gogoi of Guwahati 6-1, 6-0.
