A wonderful effort from our bowlers, says Virat

Royal Challengers Bangalore bowlers took only four wickets, but they were economical and laid the foundation for their team’s eight-wicket victory over the Delhi DareDevils, in Sharjah, on Thursday.

Spinner Yuzvendra Chahal, Man of the Match, conceded just 18 off his four overs, taking one wicket.

Pacer Varun Aaron also took a wicket, giving away only nine runs from three overs as the DareDevils were restricted to 145 for four.

Thereafter, Yuvraj Singh (52) and captain Virat Kohli (49) stitched an unbroken 84-run stand for the third wicket to take the Royal Challengers home with as many as 20 balls to spare.

Kohli was all praise for his bowlers, who bowled a disciplined line. At the same time, he lauded Yuvraj for his fluent, spontaneous batting.

The following are excerpts:

Virat Kohli: If those were mishits, they wouldn’t have gone to hand. I was just getting used to the pace of the wicket. Hopefully, I can help the team in the rest of the matches as well. One of their fast bowlers asked me ‘how lucky are you going to get?’ I told him, ‘it’s your bowlers, not mine’. I can’t help. I was trying to hit boundaries… It went straight to the fielders.

That said, a truly wonderful effort from our bowlers, It was easily a 170-plus track out there. To hold them back at 145 was certainly a commendable effort. Chahal bowled extremely well. So did Varun (Aaron), Albie (Morkel) and Mitch (Starc). Ashok Dinda had an off-day, but that happens in cricket…

It’s really sad how people targeted Yuvi after the World T20. He has won us two World Cups and is a proven match-winner. We have all looked up to him and it’s important to back a player of his calibre. Today was another of those occasions when we saw Yuvi in his expressive self. I told him ‘I’m going to bat through with you. You bat the way you want to’.

Dinesh Kart-hik: Pretty much everything went wrong for us. We did not bat well, especially at the top. It was a great partnership between JP Duminy and Ross Taylor, both of whom did wonderfully well to help us recover a bit. Duminy, though, did a very good job. He absorbed the pressure along with Ross and hit some severe blows towards the end (of our innings). We got an early wicket, thereafter. But they kept hanging on and played their shots, which came off. We were also pretty ordinary in the field. In other words, we were never in the game.

Sometimes, you don’t know whom to bowl when the opposition keeps hammering you. Nonetheless, it’s important for us to learn fast and come back harder and do better in the next game. Else, it will become more and more difficult.

Yuzvendra Chahal (MoM): It’s my second match in the IPL, I had played one for Mumbai Indians previously. I got confidence seeing the first ball turn… Just wanted to vary the pace then.

Of course, it is great to have the support of our captain Viratbhai, especially when I was chosen over a player of MuraliSir’s stature… Been a big occasion for me today.
