Noose over failed marriage

Tragedy revisited a Kadma home on Sunday night when a 25-year-old woman, separated from her husband for six years, chose to end her life.

Punam Devi, who had been fighting depression since her Chhattisgarh-based husband abandoned her just a year after marriage, used a dupatta to hang herself from the ceiling fan at her father’s house on GP Slope Road. In 2008, her mother Urmila Devi killed herself in a similar fashion, unable to accept the breakdown of Punam’s marriage.

“Around 9.30pm yesterday (Sunday), Punam asked her father to bring something from the market. When he returned, he found Punam hanging from the ceiling fan,” said a relative, B.N. Mishra.

Kadma OC Jayprakash Rana said: “Preliminary investigations revealed that the woman was suffering from severe depression and was undergoing treatment.”

Punam married S.K. Tiwary in 2007, but was thrown out of her in-laws’ residence the next year. Tiwary also filed a divorce case.

The deceased’s father Ashok Kumar Dubey, a former employee of Tata Steel, said: “Punam had filed a complaint case against her husband in a Chhattisgarh court. She was closely pursuing the case.”
