Priyanka ‘astray’ sting for Varun

Lucknow, April 13: Varun Gandhi may have vowed not to speak “a word against” cousin Rahul, but he seems to have been at the receiving end of a barb from Priyanka Gandhi Vadra yesterday.

Priyanka’s purported comment apparently came at a closed-door meeting with party workers at the Munshiganj guesthouse near Amethi and was not meant to be made public. But someone seems to have recorded it on a cellphone and passed the audio-visual clip on to the electronic media.

“He (Varun Gandhi) is surely from my family; he is definitely my brother. But he has drifted away from the correct path,” goes the clip.

“When a young member of a family goes astray, the elders need to show them the right direction. I request all of you to show my brother the right path.”

Till this evening, no senior Congress leader had reacted to the clip. “It is unfortunate that some of us leaked the statement of Priyankaji,” a source close to the Gandhis in Amethi said over the phone.

“No one is questioning the authenticity of Priyanka Gandhi’s voice on the tape. But she did not say anything offensive. She sounded caring towards her brother and her language too has not crossed the borders of decency.”

Priyanka has only once publicly criticised Varun. That happened five years ago after Varun, campaigning for himself in Pilibhit, had threatened to “cut off the hand” that dared attack Hindus.

At that time, Priyanka had asked her cousin “to read the Bhagvad Gita that teaches Hindus tolerance and love”.
