Assault on lake green belt

Hazaribagh, April 5: Over two dozen trees lining the bank of historic Hazaribagh Lake have been cut down during the past one month even as the administration and local residents claimed to have had no whiff of the crime committed in the heart of the town.

The unabated assault on the greenery came to light yesterday when The Telegraph noticed a “barren” patch of land near a cafeteria on the bank of the lake and lodged a formal complaint with SDO (sadar) Jugnu Minz.

Following the complaint, additional district collector Ranjan Choudhary visited the spot this evening and promised to take action in this matter.

“An FIR will be lodged against the culprit,” he said.

According to sources, the owner of the cafeteria felled the trees and surreptitiously transported them out of the town.

Surprisingly, all of these happened in the high security zone around the lake. Indira Gandhi Balika Awasiya Vidyalaya, Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narayan Central Jail and several district administrative and police offices as well as residential quarters are situated on the bank of the lake.
