5 state players in lead

The opening day of 4th JRD Tata International Ranking Chess Tournament, jointly organised by East Singhbhum District Chess Association and Tata Steel, on Tuesday saw 34 contestants, including five from Jharkhand, leading the table with two points each after as many rounds.

The state players who romped into the third round in style were Nishant Kumar, Nikhil Singh, Kaushal Kumar Jha, Ajit Masih and Rajesh Kumar Jaiswal.

Contestants from Tamil Nadu Srija Seshadri, M. Vijay Anand, R. Prakashram, Y. Saranya and K. Arvind scripted fine wins, while Andhra Pradesh showed early form too, thanks to Prabhat Kautha, Erigaisi Arjun, M. Aditya, Ramesh Kumar Subuddhi, A. Sudarshan and Padmanand Menon.

The other winners were Sumit Grover (J&K), K. Srikanth and Md Jamiruddin (SSCB), Govind Kumar (Uttar Pradesh), S.V. Srinath Rao and Deepankar Sengupta (Chhattisgarh), Rabindra Kumar Ojha, Susobhit Das and Ashirwad Swain (Odisha), Harsh Mangesh Ghag, Mayur Patil, Dhiraj Patil and Priyanshu Patil (Maharashtra), Ashutosh Kumar (Bihar), Ashwin Shroff and R. Karan Trivedi (Gujarat), Aditya Basu (Bengal) and Tayyeb Asif Mohammad (Madhya Pradesh).
