IIT boy letter cites depression

Kharagpur, March 31: The father of the IIT Kharagpur student found hanging in his hostel room yesterday said he had found in his son’s bag a letter addressed to “mummy and papa” that said he was slipping into depression.

Lokesh Kumar Goyel, a fourth-year chemical engineering student from Rajasthan, was found hanging by his friends who had come to call him for dinner, making it the second alleged suicide in the institute in a fortnight.

Lokesh’s father Santosh Kumar Gupta, a high school teacher in Karauli district, reached the IIT around 11.30am today. He found the letter, written in Hindi, in a bag in his son’s hostel room.

“The letter said that the boy was slipping into depression which did not have any ilaj (remedy). It was written that he failed to understand the reason for his depression and that it was impossible to come out of it. He also wrote aaj kal mujhey subah uthne mein dar lagta hai (I feel scared to get up in the morning),” a police officer said.

He added that Lokesh had also written about his inability to study properly and his recent leaning towards fun and frolic. “The student also asked his parents not to shed tears for him.”

Lokesh’s father did not speak to the media and left for Calcutta with the body this evening.
