Poll panel glare on Ajmal

Dhubri, March 29: The model code of conduct cell of Dhubri district has shot off a letter to the AIUDF district unit to show cause within 48 hours as to why action should not be taken against party president Badruddin Ajmal for his alleged communal statement.

The move comes in response to a formal complaint lodged by the Dhubri district BJP unit with the returning officer yesterday against Ajmal’s statement, “BJP joyee hole Allah aamak khama na kare (God will not forgive us if BJP wins)”, made at a news conference in Guwahati last Saturday.

The Dhubri district BJP president, Prosenjit Dutta, who lodged the complaint against Ajmal, said the AIUDF chief’s comment amounted to violation of the election model code of conduct and hence they had lodged a written complaint.

“We condemn Ajmal’s statement, which is completely against the code of conduct, as it promotes enmity between different groups and hurts the sentiment of a religious minority,” Dutta said.

“The alleged statement made by Ajmal is illegal under Sections 125 and 123 (III) of the People’s Representation Act and Section 107 of CrPC,” an official of the cell said.
