254-run lead for Hojai on Day 1

Hailakandi, March 25: Hojai were in a commanding position with a massive first-innings lead at the end of first day’s play of the Hailakandi zone J.K. Baruah Trophy inter-district under-19 cricket championship’s two-day match against Rangiya at Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Stadium here today.

Hojai took a first innings lead of 254 runs. Rangiya elected to bat and were bundled out for 74 in 24.2 overs before lunch.

Opener Manoj Gurung (14) and Manoj Jyoti Mahanta (18) were the only batsmen to score in double figures.

Medium pacer Debashis Deb’s haul of six for 20 ripped apart the Rangiya innings, while Sunil Chauhan ably stepped in with three for 15.

In reply, Hojai were 328 all out in 64.4 overs in their first innings. The innings was enriched by four half centuries by opener Shibir Ahmed (65), Sunil Chauhan (55) Abul Kashim (89) and Abhay Ghosh (65).

Rangiya’s Jiten Ghosh picked up four wickets for 60 runs while Bikash Deka and Harish Kalita took two each giving away 21 and 45 respectively. Rangiya were at 6 for no loss in one over in the second innings at the end of play.

NE tennis: The Tennis Club, Silchar, is organising the North East Ranking Tennis Tournament at its own complex in Silchar from April 3 to 6.

Trekking: A 48-member contingent from the Assam Mountaineering Association left today for a high-altitude trekking expedition to Sandakphu.

The contingent, comprising children, veterans and senior mountaineers in the age group of eight to 72 years, was flagged off yesterday.
