Hazaribagh, March 22: A Giridih school, which was used by CRPF jawans in January, was blown up late last night by a Maoist squad, which also left behind pamphlets asking people to boycott the Lok Sabha elections.
The two buildings of Utkramit Madhya Vidyalaya at Piyo village in Naukania under Khukra police station, situated about 35km from the Giridih district headquarters, were completely damaged in the attack.
Sources said that around 150 guerrillas in uniform swooped down at the school around 11pm and planted landmines at both the buildings each having three rooms.
There was no casualty as before triggering the blasts, the rebels knocked on the doors of an adjacent house, where a widow, Badki Hembrom, lived with her family and asked them to move to a safer place.
The Maoists had apparently told Badki that they were blowing the school buildings as CRPF jawans had stayed there in January.
“The Maoists triggered landmine blasts at the school in Naukania. We have sent a police team to the spot to mount a search operation and track down the rebels,” said Giridih superintendent of police Kranti Kumar, refusing to divulge anything more.
According to sources, Maoists remained at the spot for an hour after the explosions and escaped towards Pirtand forests.
“They pasted a few pamphlets on the walls of Badki’s house, which also suffered minor damages in the explosions. In the pamphlets, the Maoists have asked people not to vote in the Lok Sabha elections. Government employees have been warned against coming to the booths for poll duty. They also sought release of their jailed comrades,” said a source.
Officer-in-charge of Khukra police station Ranjit Roshan said they had recovered the pamphlets.
The CRPF jawans had used Utkramit Madhya Vidyalaya, which has 85 students till Standard VIII and two teachers, to distribute blankets among the villagers on January 9.
