Shotgun effort to woo Muslims

Patna, March 22: Shatrughan Sinha, the BJP candidate from Patna Sahib seat, is going all out to woo minorities who form a sizeable chunk in the urban constituency.

At his campaign meetings Shotgun, as Shatrughan is popularly known, has also been using his star power to make minorities undergo a change of heart vis-à-vis BJP’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi.

“In these times of dark and dirty politics, there is only one bright star who can pull everyone out of the rut. He is Narendra Modi. I urge Muslims to put their trust in Modi for once, give him one chance, just try him,” he said.

Patna Sahib comprises over 16 lakh voters of which 1.5 lakh are Muslims. Shatrughan has also aided the state BJP minority cell in marketing Modi among Muslim intellectuals and religious leaders.

At an election meeting here yesterday, Shotgun pleaded: “You (minorities) have every right to get angry with us. But never disassociate yourself from us. Give us a chance to serve you.”

In his filmy style, Shatrughan further said: “My dear Muslim friends, don’t be upset with the BJP, do not go away from us, you may not be with us today, but tomorrow you will surely come to us. Dushmani jam kar karo magar ye gunjaish rahe, jab kabhi hum dost ho jayen to sharminda na hon (Be an enemy by all means but keep the scope that should we ever become friends we should not feel embarrassed).”

Not long ago, the actor-turned-politician used to look up to BJP leader L.K. Advani as a father figure and even preferred Narendra Modi’s bete noire Nitish Kumar as a prime ministerial candidate. But he has begun chanting the NaMo mantra now. “Andhere mein Narendra Modi deepak ki tarah hain (Narendra Modi is like a lamp in the darkness),” he said.
