Four die in storm in Meghalaya

Shillong, March 20: Four people, including a mother and her child, died after a storm ravaged parts of West Khasi Hills district in Meghalaya around 8 last night.

Reports coming in from the district said 193 houses, shops and schools in two community development blocks, around 90km from here, were damaged and 41 people were injured.

The affected villages include Risiang, Japung-Ladnongsba, Khliehmawlieh, Domwahlang Mawsiang, Nongrangoi and Lumpyngngad under Nongstoin block, and Mawkynbat, Mawsngapwir and Mawkynrum under Mawthadraishan block.

The dead have been identified as Pynibor Nongsiej, 10, and Edmon Nongsiej, 22, of Lumpyngngad village and Phibanroy Marngar, 20, and her five-month-old child of Domwahlang-Mawsiang village.

Most of the injured have been shifted to Nongstoin civil hospital, around 94km from here. Seven seriously injured persons have been brought to the state capital.

A government official said an ex gratia of Rs 1.5 lakh each would be given to the next of kin of the deceased. Efforts are on to rehabilitate those affected.
