Bus runs over student

A Class X student was run over by a private bus on PWD Road near Dunlop on Thursday morning.

Residents put up a roadblock to protest the accident. It was lifted around 11.15am after senior officers from Baranagar police station promised to deploy more traffic cops on the road.

Biswarup Sarkar of Shyambazar had gone to UV Colony near Dunlop for tuition classes. “On his way back, around 10.45am, a Serampore-bound bus of route number 3 hit him,” said Subodh Sinha, a resident of the colony. The bus plies between Bagbazar and Serampore.

Biswarup, a student of Shyambazar AV School, was rushed to Baranagar State General Hospital where he was declared dead on arrival.

Residents alleged that the bus was speeding and was also trying to overtake another bus. “The boy tried to run across the road but failed to gauge the speed of the bus,” said a traffic officer.

According to him, the bus had suddenly gathered pace. “Things will be clear after the driver and conductors are arrested. They fled after the accident,” said an officer. “A half-km stretch of PWD Road, between Alambazar and Dunlop, has turned into a racing track in the absence of traffic police,” said Sinha.
