Auto driver ‘assaults’ man

A 70-year-old passenger was allegedly abused and assaulted by an auto driver on the Garia-Tollygunge route on Wednesday evening after a dispute over Rs 2.

Naktala resident Mrityunjoy Ghosh boarded the auto in Tollygunge and got off at the Bunty cinema stop. He tried to hand over Rs 12 to driver Sadhan Shaw, who allegedly refused to accept the money on the grounds that the fare was Rs 14.

An altercation ensued, during which Shaw allegedly abused and assaulted Ghosh. The passenger raised the alarm, after which residents overpowered Shaw and handed him over to police.

Shaw, a resident of Jadavpur, was arrested after Ghosh lodged an FIR with Netaji Nagar police station.

The attack is another pointer to how the transport department has failed to rein in rogue auto drivers, most of whom are affiliated to Trinamul.

Wednesday’s incident occurred on the same route where barely a month ago autos had gone on a daylong strike to protest the arrest of a colleague who had allegedly thrashed a passenger after an altercation over a change of Rs 4.
