Congress Darjeeling candidate

Calcutta, March 18: The Congress today nominated Siliguri Municipal Corporation councillor Sujay Ghatak as its candidate for the Darjeeling Lok Sabha seat.

Congress sources said they were surprised by the decision as Ghatak, 43, maintained a low profile and was “not much familiar” with the hills as he was a Siliguri resident.

Switch to Morcha

Ranjit Allay, the general secretary of the Trinamul Congress’s Bijanbari block committee in Darjeeling, today switched to the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha along with around 400 of his supporters. He accused a section of hill Trinamul leaders of being corrupt.

Bike rally nod

The Election Commission will not issue a directive against bike rallies, common during poll campaigns in Bengal.

The state chief electoral officer’s office has issued instructions to the districts authorities to permit rallies with motorbikes or other vehicles after an inspection of their papers.

Cong protest

Over 50 Congress workers from South 24-Parganas today demonstrated in front of the state Congress headquarters in Calcutta to send the message that they did not approve of the candidate the party could field in the Mathurapur Lok Sabha seat.
