Tura, March 17: Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi will address an election rally at Resubelpara in North Garo Hills tomorrow.
He will formally introduce Congress candidate for Tura Lok Sabha seat, Daryl William Momin.
Meghalaya PCC working president Deborah Marak and other party functionaries are camping in Resubelpara to oversee the preparation for tomorrow’s rally.
Rahul will address the gathering in presence of chief minister Mukul Sangma and other cabinet ministers, including Zenith Sangma, at Resubelpara playground around 2.30pm.
The SPG team arrived at Resubelpara yesterday to oversee the preparation for Rahul’s visit. Security has been alerted in the district.
Momin, 27, said, “We are anticipating Rahulji’s visit at Resubelpara. His presence in Garo hills will be encouraging for the youths.”
Rahul, who has been focusing on building a strong youth brigade, is likely to cash in on the young vote base in Garo hills.
Momin is pitted against the National People’s Party (NPP) nominee Purno Sangma, who has represented Tura parliamentary seat for eight times since 1977.
Mukul Sangma believes that the upcoming polls will be a different one. “We will prove all calculations wrong.”
The Congress won 13 seats in the last Assembly election, of 24 and five other Independents, who won the election from Tura, have joined the Congress.
“We are confident that with 18 MLAs campaigning for Momin, the election will be a different one,” said Zenith Sangma.
