Tindharia repair to begin

Siliguri, March 13: State PWD officials today said repair of the damaged stretch of NH55 at Tindharia would begin next week.

Nirmal Mondal, executive engineer of state PWD (NH division IX), said they were waiting for construction material to be delivered by Italian firm Maccaferri Environmental Solutions Private Limited from Pune to start the work. “We are waiting for the material that is expected to be delivered in a day or two. The full-fledged restoration would begin next week,” he said.

In March last year, the Union ministry of road transport and highways had sanctioned Rs 83 crore for repairing the damaged portion of NH55 at Tindharia, 30km from here.

In June, a Calcutta-based construction firm, Bharat Banijya Eastern Private Limited, got the contract for restoring the road. The firm signed an agreement with Maccaferri Environmental Solutions Private Limited to provide technical expertise for the work.

Mondal said their aim was to finish rebuilding the road before the monsoon season that begins in June. “We will receive very strong construction material, which have durability of over 50-60 years and can withstand any natural calamity like earthquakes and landslides. We want to start the work early next week so that it gets over before the monsoon,” he said.

In June 2010, a landslide at Paglajhora, 35km from here, had damaged 500m of NH55 and in September 2011, 200m of the highway at Tindharia was swept away.

NH55 connects Siliguri with Darjeeling via Kurseong.

Mondal said repair was on at Paglajhora.
