Techies die in car crash

Gangtok, March 13: Two techies working in a Bangalore-based software company died and five others were injured after the vehicle they were travelling in skidded off NH31A yesterday evening.

Around 7.30pm yesterday, the SUV skidded off the road because of heavy rainfall and fell 150ft below at Radik in Phensong, 30km from here.

Astha Pareek, 24, from Jaipur, and Akhila Maddukuri, 23, from Hyderabad, died on the spot while the others, including the driver, were taken to STNM Hospital in Gangtok.

The injured are Manish Kumar, 25, from Jamshedpur, Pawan Nair, 23, from Karnataka, Anirudh Mangipuri, 23, from Hyderabad and Sneha Mod, 24, from Mumbai. All are employees with Oracle.

The injured were rescued by police and local people.

Driver Solomon Lepcha, 24, is critical.

The medical superintendent at STNM Hospital, Yogesh Verma, said the passengers had sustained injuries on their heads, hands, legs and back. “Their family members are expected to reach Gangtok today,” said a police source.
