Rebuked in school, girl kills self

Sivasagar, March 9: A Class V girl student committed suicide at her home in Sivasagar yesterday, following alleged mental and physical torture by a teacher of her school, the police said.

Nibedita Dey, 12, a student of Sophy Mercy School here, was punished at school for her alleged misconduct and was asked to call her guardians.

Fearing rebuke from her parents, she set herself on fire when no one was at home. Neighbours heard her screams inside the house and took her to a private nursing home here yesterday. She succumbed to burn injuries today around 10am.

An FIR has been lodged at Sivasagar police station by her parents against the school authorities.

Police said an investigation was on.

According to neighbours of the student, “Harassment at school began when she was allegedly playing with paper balls with her classmates. Her real ordeal began when she was asked to call her guardians to the school.”
