Centenary cricket from Wednesday

Guwahati, March 9: Maharana Athletic Club will organise the Maharana Centenary Cricket Tournament in memory of former ICC umpire Suren Ram Phookun at Judges Field here marking its centenary celebration from March 12 to 21.

“We are organising the tournament to commemorate the centenary year celebrations of the club. The matches will be 40 over-a-side affairs and will be played according to BCCI guidelines,” said Maharana Athletic Club secretary Amiyo Kalita.

The 10-day knockout tournament will feature 10 invited teams, including Navajyoti Club, Bud Cricket Club, River Rine Club, City Cricket Club, Navarang Club, Gauhati Town Club, Ankurjyoti Club and hosts Maharana Athletic Club, along with office teams of Food Corporation of India and Auditor General, Guwahati.

“The champions team will be awarded Rs 30,000 while the runners-up will have to be content with Rs 15,000. The best batsman, bowler and the fielder of the tournament will receive a cash reward of Rs 1,000 each,” Kalita added.

“I am very much pleased and thankful to all the members of the club for remembering my husband’s contribution towards sports,” said Lilu Phookun, wife of the late Suren Ram Phookun.
