Calcutta, March 8: A speeding bus packed with wedding guests keeled over on EM Bypass early this morning, killing two people including the groom’s elder brother.

The driver is believed to have been in a hurry as the groom’s family were late leaving the wedding venue in Barasat.

“He started nudging us to leave even before we had finished dinner,” said Gouranga Baidya, the groom’s father, who has been admitted to Ramakrishna Seva Pratisthan with head and chest injuries.

“He was driving recklessly. We requested him to slow down but he wouldn’t listen.”

The driver lost control of the bus at Ajaynagar More near Garia around 2.15am. Those who died were Kalipada Baidya, 34, the groom’s brother, and Utpal Das, 35, Kalipada’s friend. Both were residents of Sonarpur.

Five others who were seriously injured have been hospitalised. The driver jumped off his cabin before the bus toppled over and fled.

An officer at Survey Park police station said the owner of the bus had told the police the driver was in a hurry because the vehicle had been rented by another wedding party this morning.

Labourers working at the New Garia-Calcutta airport Metro project rushed to the accident site and pulled out the 36 passengers.
