‘We showed character’

Calcutta: Angelo Mathews led from the front to guide Sri Lanka to a three-wicket win over Bangladesh, in the concluding league fixture of the Asia Cup, in Mirpur, on Thursday.

Having already made the final alongside Pakistan, Sri Lanka were reduced to 75 for five. But Mathews (74 not out) struck seven boundaries and one six to help his side overhaul the target.

Angelo Mathews (MoM): I was under a little bit of pressure to be honest. We were losing wickets and had to consolidate. Chaturanga (de Silva) batted beautifully. It is a good problem for us (when Lasith Malinga comes back). We showed character and application. (Mahela) Jayawardene is a big match player and I am sure he will come good for us.

Mushfiqur Rahim: Apart from the Afghanistan match, we played good cricket in all the other games. We have a couple of areas to work on. We need to improve our fielding… During the tournament, we dropped a couple of catches and that hurt us… We put up a disappointing performance in the Asia Cup… Hopefully we will come back stronger in the World T20.
