Mock drill to check quake alert

Shillong, March 5: A mega mock drill, simulating the disastrous earthquake of 1897, will be held on Monday in the state capital and Tura, West Garo Hills.

In 1897, an earthquake measuring 8.7 on the Richter scale had hit this region.

In Shillong, the mock exercise will be held from 11.30am onwards in places like the Meghalaya Urban Development Affair (MUDA) shopping complex in Khyndai Lad, Polo petrol pump, Neepco office, Shillong Public School, and in Nongrimmaw locality in Laitumkhrah.

East Khasi Hills deputy commissioner Sanjay Goyal said Nazareth Hospital, civil hospital and military hospital would be the designated hospitals for the treatment of “injured victims”.

However, other hospitals and schools (not being examination centres for the ongoing board exams) will conduct the evacuation drill on their own within their premises.

West Garo Hills deputy commissioner Pravin Bakshi said the supermarket was one of the two vulnerable areas in Tura.
