Acid victim’s home robbed

Malda, March 4: The home of a girl on whom her suitor threw acid last month was looted last night and the victim’s father alleged the youth who attacked her had led the robbery.

One of the six-seven men who came to the house, their faces covered, told the father “he would now finish” the entire family just like the girl’s life had been ruined.

On February 20, Ujjwal Mondol, 24, threw acid on the third-year college girl when she was alone at her village home, 35km from Malda town.

The youth reportedly held a gun on the girl’s head and asked her to marry him. When she turned him down, he threw acid on her and fled.

The 22-year-old girl was taken to Malda Medical College and Hospital and is now under treatment at a government hospital in Calcutta. Ujjwal has not been arrested yet.

The girl’s father, who had lodged a complaint with Baishnabnagar police against Ujjwal, his father and two brothers following the acid attack, said the youth was behind last night’s raid when the gang took away Rs 2 lakh cash that the father had borrowed for the girl’s treatment and over 50gm of gold jewellery.

The youth stays 500m from girl’s house and had been harassing her for the past two years asking her to marry him.

“My son and I were sleeping when we heard someone banging the door around 12.30am. It was as if someone was trying to break it down,” said the father.

“As we got out of bed, the door gave way and six-seven men entered. All of them had their faces covered and were carrying arms. One of them put a gun to my chest and asked me to hand over everything. He said he had burnt my daughter with acid and that he would now finish us all,” the father said.

The girl’s father said the gang threatened to kill his son, who is a Madhyamik examinee.

“The looting was led by Ujjwal. I called up Baishnabnagar police station as soon as the gang members left our house. The police arrived around 1.45am,” the girl’s father, who runs a laundry said.

The father later filed a police complaint last night mentioning the attack by the gang and the threat made by one of the men. He did not name Ujjwal in the fresh complaint.

“I had borrowed Rs 2 lakh for my daughter’s treatment and that was taken away. My son’s Madhyamik exams get over on Wednesday and I had planned to take the money to Calcutta the next day. My wife is in Calcutta with my daughter. I have no idea from where I will raise the money. I have already spent around Rs 6 lakh for my daughter’s treatment,” he added.

After the acid attack, Ujjwal’s brother Nikhil had been detained by the police.

The girl’s father said he received several threat calls from Ujjwal asking him to withdraw the case.

The youth has been absconding since the attack.

The inspector in charge of Baishnabnagar police station, Prafulla Debroy, said the police suspect Ujjwal had led last night’s raid. “We have arrested Ujjwal’s father Biswanath, who is in judicial custody. Ujjwal’s brothers Nikhil, who will write his HS exams this year, and Nirmal, a jewellery shop worker, are absconding…. We have heard that Ujjwal is an MA student in a Calcutta College,” he added.
