Man kills daughter, self

The mystery surrounding the twin bodies found in Dimna Lake on Saturday evening was unravelled with the identification of the deceased as a father-daughter duo on Sunday morning.

According to police, Umesh Yadav (35), a resident of Repeat Colony at Olidih, Mango, who was apparently depressed ever since his wife passed away in November last year, had pushed daughter Jyoti Kumari (10) into the lake to kill her before taking the fatal plunge himself. No suicide note has been found though.

MGM thana OC Shankar Thakur said that a close relative of Yadav had identified the bodies at the medical college mortuary. The relative told police that Yadav, a truck driver, was depressed ever since his wife died.

“Yadav had started drinking heavily,” Thakur said and added that the father and daughter were last seen alive at Olidih on Thursday morning. “The post-mortem report will confirm when exactly he took the extreme step,” the OC added.

Thakur, however, ruled out murder by a third person because neither of the bodies had any sign of struggle or mark of injury. Besides, the duo had clothes on when they were fished out of the lake. While Yadav was wearing trousers and a T-shirt, the girl was in a top and leggings. “Had it been a case of drowning while bathing, the deceased would not have all their clothes on,” the officer reasoned.

According to statistics made available by Jeevan, the suicide prevention centre operating from Bistupur, 30 people have executed their death wish in the steel city since January 1 this year.
