Mortaza ruled out of meet

Calcutta: Bangladesh’s Asia Cup campaign received a setback when senior pacer Mashrafe Mortaza was ruled out of the ongoing tournament with a side strain.

Bangladesh play Afghanistan in their second group league match, on Saturday. Pacer Shafiul Islam has been brought in as Mortaza’s replacement.

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) issued a media release on Friday revealing Mortaza’s injury. “Mortaza had picked up a side strain during the match against India on February 26.

The scan report suggests it is a strain on the left side. Unfortunately, he is out of this tournament.

He will carry on doing the rehab under the guidance of the BCB medical team and we will assess him further in the coming days,” the media release quoted team physio Vaibhav Singh as saying.

The media release also provided an update on Mushfiqur’s injury.

“We will continue to assess him... He will undergo a fitness test tomorrow after which we will decide whether he can play the match against Afghanistan,” Vaibhav was quoted as saying said.

Match starts: 1.30 pm (IST)
