Indians end 5th

Calcutta: The Indian Under-19 squad finished fifth in the ICC Under-19 World Cup, defeating the West Indies U-19 by 46 runs in the play-off for the fifth and sixth position in Sharjah on Thursday.

Ankush Bains, Sanju Samson and Shreyas Iyer struck half-centuries to help India to 340/8. For the West Indies, a century by Tagenarine Chanderpaul went in vain, as they could only notch up 294/8 in 50 overs.

India, chosing to bat first, started in a strong fashion, as Bains and Akhil Herwadkar put up 70 for the opening wicket. Bains (74), Samson (67) and Iyer (66) helped India to the highest team total of the tournament. For the West Indies, Gudakesh Motie picked up three for 52 and Preston McSween bagged two for 74.

Chanderpaul then scored 112 from 136 balls.
