Munich: Karim Benzema, Gareth Bale and Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice each, as Real Madrid ripped Schalke 04 apart with an emphatic 6-1 away win in the first leg of their round of 16 Champions League tie, on Wednesday.
Ronaldo took his goals tally in Europe’s elite club competition this season to 11.
With the Portugal forward and Fifa Ballon d’Or winner on such scintillating form and ably supported by Bale and Benzema it is hard to see how any team can stop Real from scoring.
No wonder then Ronaldo was pleased with his game and his side’s performance.
“I believe that we played a good game and the other side were not at the best because we didn’t let them. We scored six fundamental goals and we are just one step away from the next stage and we are happy.
“In general, the side were good, from goalkeeper (Iker) Casillas and the defence to the midfield. The work of the forwards is always to score goals. And we have done our job to perfection.”
About his individual performance he said: “The goalkeeper played well and made good saves. I always believe in myself and my abilities and my teammates help me a lot and they give me the confidence to play at such a high level. I scored twice in the second half so I’m very happy.”
Speaking about his ban, he said: “What happened has happened. I am frustrated by it, because what I did didn’t deserve a three-game ban, but I am very happy to return and score twice. We are up for the Derby against Atletico Madrid on Sunday… We are Real Madrid and we will give our best and try to win.”
Coach Carlo Ancelotti also expressed his happiness. “It was the perfect match. We played a very good game as we scored two early goals and then things opened up for us.
“We made the most of the counter attack and the speed of our forwards. The three forwards scored and helped the team a lot,” Ancelotti said.
“Cristiano doesn’t surprise me. He was really up for the game following his ban. He prepared very well for this game and played very well.
“Benzema’s performance was very good, not only for the goals but because he helped the team in holding on to the ball and also made assists.”
