The All-India sub-junior major ranking badminton tournament, scheduled to make its Jamshedpur debut from April 24 to 30, has been postponed for the second time.
The move comes after the state shuttle outfit requested Badminton Association of India to hold the tournament in winter as players would have to deal with rising mercury in the steel city if the meet were to be held in April.
Earlier, the meet was to be held at Mohan Ahuja Stadium and Tata Steel Badminton Training Centre from October 22 to 29, 2013.
However, owing to unavoidable circumstances, Jharkhand Badminton Association got the meet postponed to April this year.
Now, December 1 to 7 have been earmarked as the new dates for the tourney.
“Over 1,500 players in the Under-13 and Under-15 age groups will suffer due to Jamshedpur’s scalding heat during the indoor games if the meet is held in April. So we requested Badminton Association of India to postpone the event to December,” said K. Prabhakar Rao, secretary of Jharkhand Badminton Association.
Rao, also the joint secretary of national shuttle outfit, added that winter was the most pleasant season for playing badminton. “We are thankful to the Badminton Association for allowing us to host the tournament in winter,” he said.
Over the past few years, funds crunch prevented the state outfit from hosting top-notch shuttle meets.
It, however, pitched hard to bag the sub-junior tournament during the annual general meeting of Badminton Association of India held at Delhi in April.
Jharkhand will be fielding eight players for the singles and doubles matches at the tournament.
While some members of the state outfit had argued that the meet should be held at Ranchi, most members went in favour of Jamshedpur because the steel city has earlier hosted some big-ticket events, including the senior national championship and JRD Tata Prize Money tournament.
Moreover, the members, mostly from Jamshedpur, argued that the city had not hosted a major badminton event since 2007, when JRD Tata Prize Money tournament was held.
