Teacher suspended

The teacher of the central Calcutta school who had allegedly beaten up a Class VI student was suspended on Friday.

Uttam Singh, a temporary computer teacher at Tantia High School in Burrabazar, was arrested and released on bail. The resident of Sahitya Parishad Street, in north Calcutta, has been charged under IPC Section 324 (voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means) and the juvenile justice act.

“We have suspended the teacher with immediate effect,” said a school official.

According to the complaint lodged by the boy’s mother, the teacher had beaten his son on his hands, legs and back with a cane.

“The Class VI student was writing obscene remarks on the blackboard when Uttam Singh, who was taking class in an adjoining room, saw him,” said an officer of Jorasanko police station. The student is undergoing treatment at home. “Doctors said he should take rest at least for a week. He is under trauma,” said the child’s maternal uncle.
