IIM Shillong event to promote ideas

Shillong, Feb. 14: Students of IIM Shillong will host the second edition of TEDxIIMShillong tomorrow where speakers from different spheres of life will share their ideas and experiences.

With the theme Riding the Eclectic Bandwagon, the event seeks to bring together the community and promote the power of ideas.

“With boundaries in domains disappearing fast and issues becoming interdependent, with art influencing economy as much as geopolitics affects technology, TEDxIIMShillong brings a series of lectures by men and women from a wide variety of fields who will share their experiences, their learning and their stories. It will be true to the core values of TED Talks, bringing up ideas worth spreading with riveting talks by remarkable people from disparate fields,” Gaurav Bhardwaj, one of the event organisers, said.

For tomorrow’s event, there will be nine speakers from a variety of fields — science, social service, food and travel, business, entertainment and music — who will share their stories with the students and faculty of IIM Shillong and other participants.

The speakers include aerospace scientist B.N. Suresh, co-founder of Social Cops, a technology social enterprise that harnesses citizen voice as a powerful resource and builds synergistic, connected communities Prukalpa San-kar, and Aroha choir director and musician Pauline Warjri.

The others are television and radio anchor, actor-director and event manager Roshan Abbas, food travelogue hosts Rocky and Mayur, filmmaker, writer and gay rights activist Sridhar Rangayan, Martin Luther Christian University (MLCU) vice-chancellor Robert G. Lyngdoh and inventor of an algae-based apparatus used to capture carbon and turn it into bio-fuel, Dinabandhu Sahoo.

“They will evoke discussions on the power of diversity, believing and following one’s passion to the hilt and losing one’s inhibitions to make a conscious choice by jumping onto the eclectic bandwagon,” Bhardwaj said.

He said, through TEDxIIMShillong, one could understand the “kaleidoscope of opportunities” present around the world and the risks as well as joys of taking a detour from the usual.

In the run-up to tomorrow’s event, the organising team held a series of contests for the students and gave out exclusive TEDxIIMShillong merchandise as prizes and souvenirs.

A painting, illustrating the theme, was made by the artists at Riti Academy in Shillong and has been installed in the main quadrangle of the IIM Shillong campus. TEDxIIMShillong is an independently organised TED event, operated under licence from TED.

TED is a non-profit organisation devoted to “Ideas Worth Spreading”. Started as a four-day conference in California almost 30 years ago, TED has grown to support those world-changing ideas with multiple initiatives.

TEDGlobal 2014 will be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
